... one said, when I used to play RPGs.
Well, that was about 30 years ago and when I came across this game, it was like a flashback that got me hooked instantly. However:
In my time there used to be a users guide, in which the access to different things was explained. Maybe I have overlooked it in which case I apologise... but is there one?
I have just started the game and I fail to see how I can equip a compagnion. I think, I tried everything but I just can't seem to get it done.
Any advice for a humble (re-)beginner?

Well, chances are you just hired one of those cannon fodder mercenaries in town... those are not the game companions, just "lesser" followers which indeed you can't equip or level up.

which makes me think, the first time you hire one, maybe a tutorial pop-up should explain that. thanks for bringing it up.

That is the page on companions from the EK wiki. It should help out with most questions.
The wiki is constantly being updated with new information, if you need something to refer to while playing, the wiki is a good first start.

It can be good idea to make some simple instructions how to play game. For example, I didn't know how to see combat log after fight (touching upper middle part of screen).
