Main Mage Options (very general):
Summon + Range
Spells (no summons) + Range
Arcane Knight (melee)
Summons + Range tends to boil down to hide behind your Companion / Summons.
Spells focus tends to boil down to sniping with elemental spells (a lot of running)
Arcane Knight tends to work towards more close quarter attacks.
If you prefer to switch into a melee build as a mage, there are two very strong skills for that in Icemist that allow you to wield elemental and death melee weapons and gain increased bonus damage from them.
The two skills are "Vampiric blade" and "Arcane blade".

EU I'm struggling to get to icemistm, seriously why is it so ridiculously harder to join the mage guild? The seventh house asked me to deal with smugglers, the mages guild asks me to take flowers in places Surrounded by bears deal with trolls and I've been looking for live ice since yesterday morning The only reason I do this is because I'm curious about the new abilities, (and the mana potions) but it all seems too punishing for.
