"I had never seen a real chainmail shirt before. It was lighter than I expected it to be, though it felt like it would be far sturdier than this leather vest. The traveling armor wouldn't let me try it on, especially after I balked at the price. I quickly realized that I am going to need some more money than I can make from selling odds and ends from the goblin mine. In the inn, I heard of a trader who wanted an escort to a nearby hamlet. Though when I took him, he only wanted to pay half of what he originally promised. I did meet a new friend there. Her name is Grissenda. She was trying to retrieve her family heirloom in a tomb. She seems sad, like she carries a great burden; perhaps she will tell me more one day. She vowed to help me find my sister in return for finding her ring. Retrieving it was not easy. As I looked down those stairs, I felt a deep sense of foreboding. I heard sounds down there, something unnatural. After my eyes adjusted, I saw living corpses shambling towards me! I nearly lost my nerve. I discovered that when I muster my strength, I can whirl my weapon around me and knock back the monsters, giving me breathing room. The zombies went down easier than I thought, but the skeletons were another matter. It took many hits to shatter those abominations to pieces; I spent most of my strength just taking down two of them. Then came the ghost. It seemed like it was guarding a body, and on the finger of the corpse I saw a glint of the ring. I wasn't sure my hammer could harm the ghost, but I had to try. But I confess, at its first touch, I felt a pain and a weakness I had never known before. I lost my nerve, and ran, grabbing the ring as I bolted. I barely made it out alive. I don't know I'll ever have the courage to face that again. After that horror, squashing big spiders and diminishing the local coyote overpopulation was nothing. I was surprised when the town guard gave me a real sword for that job. I can feel myself growing stronger, my muscles becoming battle hardened. If the last week has been any indication, rescuing my sister will take everything I have, and more."
