Hi all,
It's been awhile since I first posted on this, so I figure I'll just make a new post. What are some summoner mages you all have built that are successful in the reactor level of the Ark? The only way I've found to make my summoner viable is respeccing to not summoner. I'm thinking of making a (very short lol) list of balance issues in the game, and a build being extremely viable in all areas except one endgame area where it gets demolished is definitely a candidate.
PS. Sorry for disappearing on the last post, life got busy and I needed to cool off a bit.

The Reactor level might be the trickiest part of the game for a Summoner build. Between the balls of radiation and death blasts, summons get torn to shreds fairly quickly.

Here's some notes:

-Fire Golems tend to preform a little better in the arc. The death explosions heal them whereas they kill other summons.
-The tiny starting imp is immune to shock damage, thus steel wizards pose no threat to them (even a Level 1 imp will kill the strongest steel wizard).
-Investing in END and Body Development really helps in the Ark. Those extra HP really makes a difference.
-Mage Barrier tends to shine. It's pushback moves spiders out of melee range.

Basic Tips:
It takes practice but learning to navigate the radiation balls while managing crowd control is key. Sometimes darting back to a corner to get a tactical advantage or spilt a group is well worth any damage you take from a radation ball.
Maybe don't tackle the Reactor Level until you have a helmt with Anti-Radation, and have a solid Ark weapon.
Don't worry about saving batteries. The Reactor is one place where the EMP will make a massive difference.
Solid Fire protection will help survive the blasts if you get caught in one (Ruined Dragon Boots are nifty here)
Stun Immunity from the Amulet of Whispers is almost required.
Keeping a few summon scrolls on hand can help keep a pack off you as you withdraw to a better position.

IMO reactor is the hardest area of all entire game for every class, not only for summoner. It isnt so hard as you said, with 500+ mana, rests and mana potions you can just spam golems as many as you have enemies or even more. As a tactic you need to lure enemies from rooms with big count of red balls to rooms with lesser. I used fire golems instead of iron, they are cheaper, get healed by explosions and have better cd (10sec vs 30sec), when something going wrong use death cloud and RUN or just drink invisibility potions. And nothing stops you from shooting lighting while using summons.

I never go Ark with less than 200 potions of each, and I spam them like there's no tomorrow.

Even thou the Ark is the hardest place, it is easier for the immortal Clerics
