Suggestion: stat requirements for gear

Can't wrap my head around hero class constraints limiting the use of certain weapons/armor. Why can't a mage guy equip some platemail cuirass he looted from a defeated enemy? I mean, does a mage has some unique incompatible body structure that prevents him to wear it?! It just doesn't make sense! The choice for the gear should be based more on judging of the benefits the piece provides for the character when equipped, rather than on solid senseless class constraints, imo. For example, if one has to choose between two armor pieces, one with high AC and the other with +N to mana pool, then it would be obvious that for a mage we pick a piece with mana, and high AC for a warrior. But there is a choice at least!

Of course, it would make a perfect sense if a piece of heavy armor would require a certain STR value to let it be equipped. Or a 2H weapon may require a certain level of Two-Handed Expert skill to be held. So maybe this kind of constrain would make more sense?

Stats requirements are not uncommon in games, but Class requirements are far more common and much easier to implement. Same with level requirements.

There are many reasons for this:
- some classes aren't trained to use certain armor. They don't know it's weak spots, can't move correctly, etc.,
- most heavy armor restict subtle movements, therefore mages will find it difficult to cast spells, thieves won't disarm traps, or backstab very efficiently.

Trust me, it works well ;)

Will it be more easy for you if plate mail will have requirement of minimum 3 strength, that mage will never has? Or cleric's armor will require some knowledge of holy shit that clerics train all their life?
Ok, there is some stories about battlemages. But not in this world. May be some another century.

Both Staves and wands are ranged weapons, so their dmg is upgraded by Agility

I think it will make more sense this way. Besides, it will add another edge to RPG aspect when even a low-level warrior can't equip a top-edge gear till he meets a certain trait/skill requirement.
But that is my opinion about chest slot armor. As for hand slots - yes, class restriction here makes sense assuming mages channel their spells through fingers or whatever way magic technically works. :geek: So special requirements should be met by that type of gear for spellcasters.

What you propose is a system that has merits and flaws in itself, but at this point it's not going to happen, not because I don't like that kind of design, but because the game basic rulesystem is already done and working.

I'm not going to rebalance almost 1000 items and redesign itemization for every class and each level bracket... current itemization is based in classes because of how the game was originally designed; I might very well have added such requisites myself if I had designed everything differently. Heck, I even did, adding INT requisites for scrolls. But that's it, I won't make changes to the game that will make a million people reload their save and discover they can't use their sword anymore ;)

Wasnt sure cause the staff is a 2 handed weapon and strength increases2 handed weapon by 1.5 so i was hoping for that

I was thinking the same. Was planing later to rebuild mage for 2h. Maybe should change description for: "two handed range weapon" or something else. Coz people would waste points for str.
