so I just recently started playing the game and im trying to make a summoner mage build, however I have no idea on what to do and which items I should try to get. My mage character is currently level 5 and these are my stats :

str: 0
end: 0
agl: 2
Int:2
Awa: 1
Per: 1
(2 available points)

Staff mastery 1
Mana surge 1
Mage armor 2
Lesser summon 2

any tips/guides would be really appreciated

Staff + Summon = Pretty tough.

Here's a brief discussion on going with Fire Mastery.

Here's a brief discussion the general build, see here.

And here's a REALLY, REALLY detailed Walkthrough for summon +staff mage. It's in a different language but the screen shots are step-by-step. Plus you can likely use Google Translage.

You're way early in the game so you might feel a little overwhelmed.

Mages can definitely feel a bit squishy at the lower levels compared to the other three classes but for the fact that you've made it to level 5 already and seem to have a decent point spread to build on, I'd say keep playing it as you've been going; you're doing okay.

I'd personally invest those couple of points you have in AWA and PER, just to give you an easier time spotting traps and advancing dialogue checks but as a tip for the former, pop your Mage Armour active whenever you think there might be hidden traps in your path and it'll protect you from the ones you don't spot/disarm successfully.

Talk to everyone and save lots, prioritise talking to and doing quests for other mage types, like wizards and the older loreseekers and you'll pick up more mage-related items than if you do Warriors Guild, for example.

Take heed of each of the individual summon types' strengths and weaknesses because while stronger in many ways than you are, they all have a vulnerability to a particular element that'll see them gone faster than you might be otherwise prepared for.

Have you picked up a companion yet? Finding the right one to suit your playstyle can turbocharge your progress through certain areas but picking up and following quests will lead you to all of them organically enough if you don't want to spoil the story as it's unfolded to you in game.
Have fun with it, however you progress.

It looks like I had a copy and paste error in the link. It should work now.

Progressing as a mage is difficult for sure, but I am having a ton of fun with it. I am currently just trying to level up so that I can do the wizard quests, I'm using staff of force and caduceus of scorching and I also have griss as my companion since she is a decent tanker.

Town Hall quests can help with this, as well as raising reputation along the way but be wary of potential reputation drop with certain factions if you start to do them in lands that lay further afield from Varsilia, for example.

I think I missed my mage for one reason or another with every character I went back to afterwards, even Adaon worked well with us both ranged or him stabby. My current rogue just opened Icemist, so I shall be checking it out for the first time but better prepared for when I revisit my mage (or build another), which I'll surely do.

My choice would be to get END 2 now. The extra life and toxic resistance is useful in the early game.

My 2nd choice would be to save for INT 4. Even numbers give the biggest damage bonus with Staff Mastery. Depending on how many tombs you found in the early dungeons (there's one in every one with undead), you might have just a quick dungeon dive to get that missing point.

My distance last choice would be to get AWA 3 now. The extra extra ability to spot traps and secrets is useful and will set you up late game quest checks. The extra defense is nifty but really not crucial. Again, this is a distant third option.

I chose a slightly different path with my mage and was using Adaon at last save point but followed similar logic as VDX is suggesting (even numbers for STR too, if/when you add any).

Took some screens to show where I've laid my spread and I'll show Adaon too, who has started to shine even more since I picked up the knockback feature from Wand Mastery to raise his stun chance with the bow from the extra shots he can get in with higher DPS than me to boot.
