It would be nice to have a item that when used teleports you to your ancestors tower. Maybe just have it a one way like the scrolls of recall but toward your tower. You have to craft it in the laboratory using a scroll of recall and maybe something you find in the basement. It's like changing the magic of the scroll to port you to the tower and then cementing the magic to a orb or a rod. Have it where it consumes a scroll of recall when you use it, as the magic cannot regenerate itself. Later in the game you might be able to have it a unlimited version.

I get the distinct feeling that any of the wizards towers scattered across the continent will give you access to your own tower, in time. That said, we'll probably need to get in the good books with the mages in order to use them, making early game missions that can result in a massive negative rep with said wizards becoming all the more important

The lore of the tower does make this somewhat difficult. Your grandfather tried to keep the location a secret, and the teleportation only works one way to NG. Meaning he purposely separated his device from the teleport system.
This will become a more pressing issue if crafting and other future additions make trips to the tower a more frequent need. For now, making the trip there to drop off shards/random loot for storage isn't bad at all.
