Some questions about companions

From the beginning of the game, I've had Adaon as my warrior's companion; he's up to level 12 now, does some decent damage and of course is good at finding secrets. He seems to pick rather randomly whether or not he tries to disable traps, though. Is there some criteria that he's following, like maybe he'll only attempt a disable if the trap level is low enough to ensure a good chance of success?

I'm going to test this out later, but also I'm assuming that the other companions, since they haven't been adventuring with me, will be at whatever base level they were when we met, should I decide to take them along instead of Adaon?

Also, if I take Hirge with me, will she automatically heal me when I'm wounded to a certain extent, or will she only cast Heal Wounds when she herself is wounded, and hopefully I'll get the runoff?

Are there any plans for there be options for more specific or detailed instructions or requests we can make of the companions? Like "Use ranged weapons on all enemies in sight, then hand weapons when enemies get close" or something like that?

Thanks!

I think Adaon tries to disarm when his skill is at 65% and Hirge has an increasing chance to heal when you or she are below 50%.

Companion xp transfers over when you switch who is traveling with you. Hirge's heal spell works as an overflow. When she is fully healed, whatever is left over goes to you. She does heal you even if she is fully healed, but not sure at what hp percentage loss that kicks in at.

The reason Aodan seems inconsistent is because the trap difficulty is inconsistent. Traps have a hidden level assigned to them and the difference in level translates to a bonus/malus depending on the difference between his level and the level of the trap. So the traps in the dungeon you are exploring are adjusting Aodon's disable % to just under or over 65%

Hirge does not need to be injured to heal. You just have to have collectively sustained more damage than she can restore in a single spell. It is important to note that her healing spell has a cooldown similar to, if not the same, as if you were playing a cleric.

To my knowledge, only 50% of the XP you earned with one companion will be transferred to the next companion upon switching.

For clarity, the level of trap (or secret door) is listed in the combat log is noted at time of detection. While it can get confusing if there are multiple traps nearby, checking the trap level helps make an informed choice when it comes to attempting to disarm a trap.
