Yes. All major builds have made it through the game without a Companion.
There are predictable challenges with the reduce fighting ability.
Using good fighting tactics to separate groups into smaller groups will hep a lot. Use those corners, doorways, and aggro-distrance to an advantage. Stocking up on potions will help a lot, too.

Going after some of the easier black shards will help, too.

Mages that can summon offset that a bit.
Cleric's with Spirit Wolf offset that a bit (but not as much as mages).
Warriors with group skills (Cleave, Whirlwind) offset that a bit.
Rogues will have to have some great kite skills.
Using summon scrolls will help, so you might want to invest in INT and Magical Training.

By the late game, the issue won't be as bad. Keep in mind you have to take on the last dungeon solo anyways.
Superbuilds won't have an issue, but superbuilds (Level 25+) because they are overpowered for the game.
