Question: Why is the party limitation not just 6 characters?

I know that this is a niche question, since the vast majority of players will just start with a party of 4 characters and it wouldn't make much of a difference for them.
However, for the people who do start with a party of 1-3 characters, I see that it is mentioned that currently the limit deliberately is (party + 2 companions).

But I do wonder why that choice was made, after all, there isn't much difference in power level between picking a party of 4 with 2 companions, or a party of 2 with 4 companions, since companions currently are just as strong as the main characters.

The first argument that I maybe see is that it allows you to swap characters more easily once you have a lot of companions to choose between, giving you more versatility for certain fights, but it comes at the cost at having a slower start with a smaller core group, and you don't level the characters that you don't use, so I don't see that as a major power difference.
Another possible argument is that if you chose to challenge yourself by going with a smaller team, that it would take away from the challenge if you can just fill your roster later. However, you still have to choose to pick up companions, so if you choose to challenge yourself then you can just decide not to pick them up, negating that argument too.

But it could be that I'm missing another major reason why this choice has been made, perhaps related to future content.
