If you right-click on an item in the party inventory, the appearing menu always shows an "Equip" button, irrespective of the type of item.
Hitting the button does nothing if the item is actually not equipable, so no harm done. But it's odd nonetheless to see this displayed for a book or potion.
I think this was introduced with the ability to equip armor or weapons directly from the party inventory (instead of having to move them to the backpack first).
