Mercians are very similar to Romans

I have noticed the similarities between Mercians and Romans:
-Both are powerful militaristic factions
-During the Roman Republic period, Velites were light infantry units. In Mercian army, Velites are lightly armored scouts
-Both have build a gigantic arena in their capital
-Both have slaves
-Both are in conflict with "barbarians". Romans have fought against Picts, Gauls, Germans, etc. Mercians fight against Varannari
-Roman legions often rebelled if there was no pay. One Mercian legion revolted against their empire, but not because of pay, but it still similar
-Both have similar armies with legionnaires, centurions and velites
Feel free to correct me or add something to the list

Velites were not Roman Republican unit, but pre Marian reform unit.

Nope, Romans (before the fall of the Western Empire) never used plate armor
