Although they're good in the early stages of the game, they suck after that and people don't bother using one

1st is making their levels higher. 2nd I think making the mercenary be able to make it equip armor and weapons and can also use potions would be good. Of course the mercenary is mortal unlike our undead companions so I think it's fair. Also make their cost hiring more expensive the higher their level.

I agree that mercenaries aren't very useful when my character is like about level 7 onward, since they don't appear to scale in power at higher levels. I don't find it that big of a deal since I can get by with my follower.

Still, one suggestion I have besides them scaling in power better is the possibility to see their armor/equipment or stats, since it appears some mercenaries don't even have armor while others do.

I would like to have less mercenaries and the ones that exist to be more interesting, I think you gave me an idea

How about making the named guards of towns be able to be hired for mercernary work after a certain quest or Hero status in the town. If they die they can just respawn back to theit town

Also guild factions should have mercenaries for hire. It would be cool to have an armored warrior mercenary rather than a regular chump

For making them more interesting and have less I mean that they maybe can have some history like lore behind them, actual companions are pretty lame and boring and his deaths are as importants like killing a wolf, and are so many in all directions (you can even find like 2 or 3 in your road to a city) that replacing them is like change cloths, I can talk long about that, but everyone with his own opinion
