take the west zoneline from the trollfens and you'll meet a couple people that'll solve your problem

In the Trollfens, near Gurgurths Cave, there is an exit to the west. This will lead you to a camp of two people, one of whom is a Troll. Speak with chick to hear her story, speak with troll. Do not attack troll, instead take dialogues that lead you to realize the troll is actually a transformed human (I used the INT1 check, not sure if another route exists). He will give a small troll key that opens the gate. From there, its standard questing.
