HI all.
One thing that I have really learned to appreciate about this game is some element of innovation, as the fact that armors - as weapons - do not provide a fixed damage reduction, that helps the players not to be too careless.
Here I see 2 problems:
1) it is too drastic since it really is a penalty for many character builds and is one of the main factors for which some areas where you are swarmed by strong opponents as trolls will always be dangerous no matter how much you grind to level up.
Ideally I would go for a 50% with no shield, 60 with bucklers, 70 with large shield and 80% with tower shields as scutum, maybe with a lower percentage accordingly to the game difficulty.
2) Connecting to the thread where there are too many items with an excess in trade-offs, I have seen that in some cases the most expensive armors offer better protection but reduce the bonus to life points in comparison to cheaper stuff.
For instance, the Legion Armor offers overall a better protection from physical and elemental damage than ordinary Platemail but extra life points (HP) are considerably less.
Let's say that a fully equipped warrior has:
Platemail set: AC = 13 (min 2.6); HP = 45
Legion set: AC = 18 (min 3.6); HP = 25; Fire/Cold +24%.
As you can see, the minimum damage reduction (even if rounded up to 3 or 4) is not really that different and overall the Legion armor, that is so much more expensive, does not offer such a better protection in comparison.
I really think that a small re-balance should be done here.
