I left Laertes after the manticore was getting the best of us. Now i cant get the medallion? Been back to the island many times and can't find anywhere.

Yes, this is a known issue. Fleeing the map without getting the medallion or beating the manticore makes the quest impossible to complete. A future update *MIGHT* have a way to re-set the fight but for now, you're stuck.
You can try loading from a previous save (if you didn't already stay in an Inn, you can simply load from the last inn rest by clicking on the yellow folder icon at the game select screen).
