When you're online with your phone, you can save your data with a Cloud Save. I think probably as long as you're signed in on Google Play or the App Store, you should be OK... but maybe David or someone else knows for sure.

As explained, if you do a cloud save without errors you will be able to cloud-restore in your new phone as long as you login into Google Play Games with the same ID.

However, as cloud is not entirely under my control and a few users experience errors, there is a 100% way to keep your data safe. Use the option to export to a file.
