How to organize areas

One of the top priorities is to create pages for all areas and quests in the game, followed by items, spells, talents, and all the rest.
While quests seem to be relatively straightforward, I'm uncertain how to best organize areas, specifically outdoor areas.

In EK, every outdoor area was basically identical to one tile in the world map. It had an explicit in-game name and a clear border.
Doing the same in AL poses a problem: The outdoor areas are much larger, currently consisting of only one tile (i.e., Galeb's Peninsula). Putting every content on a single page for the Peninsula seems excessive to me. Users would probably be overwhelmed by the information gathered there.

So I feel that we should subdivide the outdoor areas into smaller pieces and give them separate pages. There certainly needs to be some kind of Region page (for the entire Peninsula) which would list the different areas within this greater region and directs the user towards the respective Area pages.

The problem with this approach, however, is that the definition and naming of these areas is not necessarily covered by in-game information and probably debatable. Some area definitions would be evident, like Galeb's bluffs and Dead Valley, others would by more generic, like "Eastern Beach", "Western Beach", and so on. But how to name, e.g., the "Area beyond the Outpost"?

So I'm currently unsure what would be the best way to organize this geographical stuff. Any suggestions are welcome.

How feasible would a basic 'flowchart' with interactive links be to put on the region page? That way, even more generic areas could at least be identified by how they connect to other areas.

For example, here is map from a steam guide for the game Lunacid.

What about like an interactive map of some kind, we could have a map of the whole peninsula then divide it and label it however we want and have them be able to click on the area on the map to bring them to the wiki page for it

Yeah, we currently have something like that already on the EK wiki for the list of areas.
So if we have a full uncovered local map then we could just make something like that too, where if they click on a specific area that it takes them to the page for that part.

So the flow would be the following:
World map -> Local map -> Local area

Of course, smaller areas like the starting beach and indoor sections can just be put on the wiki as is I think.
The only area like that which might give some trouble is the first dungeon since that has overlapping layers so we might need to split that map in two parts.

As BattleLord already mentioned, making an interactive map of the Peninsula is no problem. What troubles me a bit is the "divide it and label it however we want" part, because this will always require some consensus among players and Wiki editors (as there is no clear in-game definition and naming).

But let's try and see if we can find a good solution. So here's my clumbsy approach on dividing the map into meaningful bits.

Some suggestions for naming:
  1. Galeb's Pensinsula - Mountain Path
  2. Galeb's Pensinsula - Central Area (including the Outpost)
  3. Port Galeb (including the Geldryn quarters)
  4. Galeb's Pensinsula - Eastern Beach
  5. Galeb's Pensinsula - Dead Valley
  6. Galeb's Pensinsula - Road to Urendale
What do you think?

I might break into a few sub-areas:

Dead Valley, AND, Dead Valley Beach
(keep in mind there's a not-so-secret-dungeon being added to the beach)

Road to Urendale to be the loosely defined are to the edge of the map with:
a: Red Axe Canyon
b: Daggerbend
c: Mirmek cave canyon
d: Forrest North of Road

Those might be breaking it down too far but some sub-areas, even if informally used, would help.

Agreed, the beach next to Dead Valley should be a separate area. But as it's not a haunted place, I would simple refer to it as Western Beach (as a counterpart to the Eastern Beach area).

Also agreed that the area beyond the outpost should be divided into smaller pieces. The narrowing point with the bandit tax collectors seems to be a natural barrier. And Daggerbend probably deserves its own page, as well as the Red Axe Renegades.

So here's the next iteration:

  1. Galeb's Pensinsula - Mountain Path
  2. Galeb's Pensinsula - Central Area
  3. Port Galeb
  4. Galeb's Pensinsula - Eastern Beach
  5. Galeb's Pensinsula - Dead Valley
  6. Galeb's Pensinsula - Western Beach
  7. Galeb's Pensinsula - ??? (Beyond the Outpost / ... )
  8. Galeb's Pensinsula - Red Axe Canyon
  9. Galeb's Pensinsula - ??? (Yakksa Territory / Road to Urendale / ... )
  10. Daggerbend
I'm really unsure how to name #7 and #9. Nothing I could think of feels right. So, again, any suggestions are welcome.

A short update on the area section of the Wiki:

I finally had some time to prepare the maps (well, at least the outdoor areas, dungeons are pending) and create stubs for all areas.
The maps are not yet annotated, but the template backbone is implemented and ready to be filled with information.

You can get a glimpse here (note the navbar at the top of the page which provides access to different views):

Anyone who is interested in contributing to fill the pages with content can have a look at the respective template documentation:
It's very similar to what we have in EK Wiki, so veteran Loreseekers should be familiar with it.

I will post details on Wiki access in a separate thread.
