Is Hirge absolutely superior to Grissendia as a companion for a summoner type mage? I just got my first advanced summon skill - Ice Mastery - and respecced to get rid of all the elemental blasting skills I'd been using until now and raise my Ice Mastery to Level II. I've been playing through several different quests with both companions, and it's clear that as long as you keep Hirge's Mana pool up you'll need to summon new elementals less often and use fewer healing potions with her than Grissendia. On the other hand, once she runs out of Mana Hirge sucks as a tank.
In general, I think I'd rather rely on Grissndia rather than Hirge as my companion if that's possible. Firstly, as a wand wielder, I split my stats between Per, Int, and Agi, and I like hogging all the caster stat items for myself. Also, as a matter of roleplaying (as opposed to min-maxing) my character likes Grissendia more than Hirge. My character is heroic, honorable, and enjoys helping the downtrodden, and as a result he has done quite a bit of work for the Church of the Three, and has gained their respect. But (unlike myself IRL) my character is only semi-religious. He is a mage and prefers to see the Three as powerful magical beings rather than gods per-se. Hirge's talk of visions grates on his nerves, though not as much as Andon's selfishness. Grissendia and her noble's honor is something he is entirely in sympathy with. In terms of the middle and late game how much of a disadvantage am I at when playing with Grissendia rather than Hirge?
