Completing Shards of Fate WITHOUT killing Undermother or Flame Prophet

Q: Should it be possible to complete the quest Shards of Fate without having to kill either the Undermother or the Flame Prophet?

Discussion: Currently, it's possible to complete the Shards of Fate quest by collecting 12 shards from Rumour Bosses, allowing a player to skip some or all the named bosses that carry the shards, most notably it allows skipping the Undermother and Flame Prophet challenge.

I stumbled across on a current play through as I previously thought there was only a limited number of shards that would drop from rumor bosses, making it necessary to find the ones from the named monsters, including the Undermother or Flame Prophet.

It really depends on a role of this quest in the whole story. Now it's just another placeholdet for a quest imo:
- it says there is time limit, but that's not true
- it says reassembling the mirror is important, but it has no use
- the quest is epic long, but there is no significant reward
- it depends on random a lot
Imo if the quest is an important piece of the main storyline, then EVERY single shard should drop from a unique boss (or subquest, maybe even companion's subquest), and there should be at least some lore associated with each (undermother is a good example).

From what I know (which may be incorrect), there's no limit on shards dropped by rumor bosses in that respect. You can get all shards from rumor bosses. After you have all shards, rumor bosses stop dropping them.

That does seem to be the case---all 12 can be obtained from Rumor Bosses allowing a player to avoid having to find or fight any of the named monsters that carry a shard.

The pop-up after you find all the shards says you can still complete quests related to getting shards, they just won't drop.

Uh.... yeah... duh.... but that's not the point of this thread which is discussing the role play value of being able to complete Shards of Fate without having to fight any of the named, and stronger, monsters in the game, including the Undermother and Flame Prophet.

I think they were saying that you won't miss out on any of the other quests if you choose to get all the shards from rumor bosses. You can go back and do them later, if you want, rather then as part of the Shards of Fate quest itself.

Again... stating the obvious. I'm aware, and it's clearly stated, that currently that is the case. The question presented is should that be the case?

Should the number of shards from Rumur bosses be capped so that a player HAS to fight some, if not all, the named monsters that carry shards, including the Undermother or Flame Prophet?

And because someone is going to want to say it, yes, I am aware that CURRENTLY a player can collect all 12 shards from rumor bosses and either skip or complete later the side quests for the Undermother.

From a roleplay perspective, why should it be capped? We know the mirror broke into many more pieces than just the 12 or so you need. They had to have gone somewhere.

It also fits the players choice theme David is going for. Don't think your strong enough to kill an ancient and powerful being? Go for the rumor boss instead.

I would argue that some of the higher level rumor dragons and liches are harder to kill then most of the named bosses that drop shards. Really the only truly difficult one is the unweakened Undermother, which David originally didn't even think was possible to kill. And if you choose not to kill her but instead talk to her she has some useful warnings that I am sure tie into the future main story quest. So yes, from a role-playing perspective I have no issues with not having to kill any of the named monsters.
