Not sure if exploit is the right word, but the math supports my theory.

A tag along companion gains less than 1/2 of the XP you get, usually ~20%. So in theory, to build my desired companions level faster, it is better to grind solo(if you can) or bring the secondary companion along. When your done grinding, grab your preferred buddy and they get a nice XP bump, a lot more than the other companion doing the work, since its half of what you gained while apart.

Companions get 50% experience whether they're in combat or not. But you're correct -- if you fight solo you get 100% exp, if you fight with a companion you get 80% (and they get 50%). So your exp is penalized for bringing a companion. This seems like the right risk/reward setup to me, since soloing is riskier, so not an exploit.

Not sure, but maybe you were seeing the round-off error that happens with companion exp. For example, a level 7 Imp gives me 40 exp solo. With a companion it gives me 32 exp, and my companion 19 exp. I get 80%, but 19 isn't 50% of 40 exp, it's slightly less.
