I am new to this game.
While in goblin mine with my warrior and companion (Shep), I noticed that Shep does not spawn after dying.
Is this expected ?

Regular mercenaries you can hire for 650ish gold do not respawn, and are generally rather useless from my experience. Only Hirge, Adaon and Grissenda are actual "companions" in the sense that they're effectively immortal and have their own skills and traits you can upgrade, as well as inventory.

We can say that EK has one moral: Not all you can buy with money is worth it. :D

So, mercenaries you can buy them, but they aren't worth as much as those you get by helping them without any money involved.

This morals can also be applied into real life.

Hired mercenaries tend not to be worth the gold. At very early levels, the gold is too prohibitive to hire them, and when your high enough level the gold is affordable, the mercenaries are too weak to make a difference.

In theory, hiring a mercenary might give you the extra power for a tough boss, but it's really hard to keep the mercenary alive through a dungeon (or even an over world map). So by the time you reach the boss, the mercenary is dead. Holds true even with a group support role Cleric build, or if you try clearing the route and than getting the mercenary and returning. Using a summon scroll (wolf etc) is more effective. Sure, the wolf dies quickly, but it distracts the boss, or mob of enemies chasing you.

Mercenaries were added very early in the game and as the game developed over the last few years, they were made increasingly useless, if they every were useful.

KEEP IN MIND THAT SOME QUEST RELATED NPC's CAN DIE TOO! A few don't, like the one in the bank or in the horrible sewers (deliberately vague), but escort and rescue NPC's can die, resulting in a failed quest.

How do companions have separate inventories? Theres one shared inventory for your character and your companion. Theres no separate inventories is there?

Well I didn't mean inventory as in bag space, more like they have their own gear inventory, as in you can outfit them with armours and weapons of your choice, something you cannot do with random mercenaries.
