is casual supposed to be easier than normal?

At game start, the in-game description tells you the difference between Normal and Causal mode.

Casual is THE SAME as Normal except two crucial points:
1) You regenerate a little life when idle
2) You can save in dungeons.

So, in some ways the game is a little easier but for the most part it's the same. Note, quick saving in a dungeon can be nice right before fighting a boss (saves time if you have to re-start) but can also back fire if you save in a place that you die no matter what. Common problem with abusing quick saves (see video here.)
