... there is no need for 1 time use item in this game like that.

For Ironman players, the item is a game saver as one death and the game has to be started over from the very start. THAT is why I try to avoid Ironman. Too easy to hiccup and loose serous play time.

For players not on Ironman, the Ankh of Life is useful on certain bosses where a player COULD start from a save but the safety net is useful.

The thread you commented on is so old, I'm pretty sure the commenters had kids, watched their kids grow up, and now are wasting away on life support in a nursing home.... okay, that's a bit extreme but you get the jest.
