After activating the quest "... and the Abyss Gazed Back," a player who gets the Steel Key from inside Askatir Mine before even finding the locked gate still gets a journal update entry about the locked gate.
Note: Askatir mine branches left and right at the start of the dungeon, the gate is on the right path, the key on the left path. Thus, a player can easily reach one before the other (side stepping the death by stun aspect of the area).
