Ancient steel key - finished mission but cant get rid of it - Spoilers

I finished the '...abyss gazed back' mission that requires the key by going to the guy in town, but picked up the other one and now cant get rid of it.

For some reason I thought it dissapeared once the mission was finished?

That would clutter up your chests... I guess just toss it what ever permanent chest you don't use? Tower chest?

I could do that, it just seems odd that the key stays in the game after the mission is over. I was hoping there's a better solution than an item slot permanantly being used up by a useless item.

An oversight from my end. I added a trigger in Askatir Mine for next update; walking around the entrance (near the notice) will remove the key from your backpack if you already opened Duremas' gate.

It would have been more elegant to do this as part of the quest dialog scripts, but I don't want to touch them at this point, and adding extra lines would mess with the translations.
