Were they inspired by the Varanasi culture (India)?

Will there be a meeting of our heroes with ancient remnants (ruins, etc.) of this culture?

they're completely unrelated. And of course there will be more about them.

To me it seems that the Varannari are more like the shamanic/voodoo culture. They have no specific good/bad attitude, they are more on the natural side. They can be friendly pelt collectors or hostile witches. Did you get inspiration from some Spanish witch-related myth, David?
