The Plan: Take on a Geldryn Raiding party very early in the game without using potions or scrolls.
The Result: A pyrrhic victory and a mad-dash back to town.
The abridged context for the set-up is I took on a Geldryn Raiding party at Level 2. Bodyguard had a shock mace, and party had two yew bows, but other than that, the basic tier 0 stuff you find in the first dungeon. Party of 6 (Companions: Captain and Ranger).
The opening rounds went as one might expect, Geldryn overwhelmed, and the stacking poison damage wrecked the BodyGuard and Captain. First few rounds saw summon creatures couldn't take a hit, and couldn't dodge, so they died right way. Entangled spell held one of the three at bay.
And here's where it got interesting.
Monsters:
1 Geldryn Raider full health, entangled.
1 Geldryn at 2/3+ health and free to move.
My surviving party:
Human Burglar with 10 AP and a 5 AP bow
Dex 6 Human Initiate, with yew bow (low WP)
Dex Human Apprentice with bow (and not WP)
Ranger with his bow (forget the type?)
It was obvious the Apprentice was not going to be much help. He couldn't hit, and he used all his WP. I moved him TOWARDS the Raiders so he was the closet target (but still at range), and scattered the three other bow uses in different directions to maximize distance the raiders would have to take to get all three. The idea being that no matter who the raiders chased, two would survive a few more rounds.
It worked.
Burglar got off two critical hits in a row in the same turn to finish off the weaker Geldryn. Everyone got a few shots at the trapped Geldryn, who broke free as soon as his turn. Apprentice lead him on a very short chase away from the other party members. That bought enough space for the ranged attacks from the surviving party members to chip away till victory.
Two characters made it out alive, one deeply poisoned.
It was the raiding party guarding one of the fountains, so not even a chest as a prize.
But there are other Geldryn Parties in the area, a few that guard chests. So it could be possible to get those chests a little earlier than planned.
