Since we are able to both travel with a companion and outfit a companion I thing it would be a good idea of said companion was able to carry items. If said companion had his/her own inventory slots we would be able to carry twice as much (no need to split the gold unless you want to be nice and split the loot with the companion like the xp is done).
Also, if the companion is able to have his/her own inventory then they should be-able-to use items on their own during the game (i.e. heal themselves or protect themselves with potions). You could even have them pick-up items and if the items are better than what they are currently using switch to these new items.
