Did you use Google Play to purchase the game? You might want to check with the third-party system (Google Play, Steam etc) on how to merge, or update your account. That might be the more effective approach.

This is Google's business so I can't say for sure, but I think when a license belongs to a Google account, it remains there for life. Maybe you can contact them in that regard.

However, nothing prevents you from having that old account added to your device as well, with all the sync turned off so it pretty much does nothing. Make sure it is the "active" one in Play Store app -> Settings, and your license should be detected.

You can also additionally login to your old account and deactivate all synchronizations for that. This way you can use your old account with purchase for Google play only. I have 3 accounts simultaneously, that's no problem for Android.
